Matthew Lien (lee-ENN), a resident of Canada' Yukon Territory, has been composing, recording and producing music for most of his life. Singing traditional German and American folk songs as a child with his family, he graduated to the guitar and piano by the age of 10. With formal music lessons leaving him uninspired, he abandoned them after a few weeks and proceeded to teach himself piano and music theory, drawing inspiration and knowledge from friends and family.

Matthew draws considerable inspiration from the natural world. In an effort to create a moving and inspiring experience for live audiences, and out of a strong desire to raise awareness about endangered wilderness, Matthew and renowned photographer and white-water paddler Ken Madsen developed the Yukon Wildlands Project. The pair have traveled rivers of the Yukon, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Alaska, coordinating other musicians and artists in an effort to interpret these areas through music, visual images and sound design. Matthew has recorded peregrine falcons attacking grizzly bears, calving glaciers, squeaking furry picas, rolling icebergs and much more. Edited into six-channel surround sound, the material is then woven into original music composition and set ablaze in thrilling live performances with stunning photographic projection, dramatic sets and lighting design.

The latest and most ambitious of these collaborations between Madsen and Lien is the Caribou Commons Project, which has grown into a coalition of environmental and aboriginal representatives dedicated to the protection of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Canadian range of the Porcupine River caribou herd which calve in the Arctic Refuge each year. The Caribou Commons Project has completed several international efforts including a live concert tour which crossed Canada and the United States (including such renowned venues as the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.), as well as smaller multimedia presentations throughout North America. More recently, the "Walk To Washington, D.C. for the Arctic Refuge" completed a self-propelled journey of several thousand miles across the United States, with performances and events along the route climaxing at Capitol Hill in the United States.

The Caribou Commons Project continues to draw attention to the threat of oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the sensitive calving grounds of the Porcupine River caribou herd, and Matthew is currently at work on a new CD entitled "Arctic Refuge," dedicated to this issue.

Keiko Matsui's last album, 2000s Whisper From the Mirror, was picked up and reissued by the Narada label in 2001, and Narada is also releasing her 12th album, . It's an appropriate match-up for the Japanese pianist, since Narada is known primarily as a new age label, and, though her records are being released on its Narada Jazz imprint, "new age" is actually the best category to place her in. From the start of her career, Matsui has been shelved under "jazz," but that has always been more a marketing ploy than anything else, and never more so than on Deep Blue. Her compositions are melodic tunes, many of which sound like songs without lyrics, while others seem like soundtrack excerpts from a film not yet made. Matsui does solo within the tunes on occasion, but her improvisations -- if that is even what they are -- tend to explore further melodic developments rather than really take off. And the supporting instruments are just that -- percussion, string, and keyboard elements that support the composition. The music is said to be inspired by North Africa and the Mediterranean, another clue to its real intent. Jazz musicians rarely bother to make such extra-musical programming remarks, while classical, soundtrack, and new age composers do it all the time. As usual with Matsui's recordings, is attractive and engaging, and the bright pianism is consistently pleasing in its expression of flowing melodies. That it doesn't really belong in the category to which Matsui has somehow been assigned does nothing to diminish its appeal.

Keroncong adalah sejenis musik Indonesia yang memiliki hubungan historis dengan sejenis musik Portugis yang dikenal sebagai fado. Sejarah keroncong di Indonesia dapat ditarik hingga akhir abad ke-16, di saat kekuatan Portugis mulai melemah di Nusantara. Keroncong berawal dari musik yang dimainkan para budak dan opsir Portugis dari daratan India (Goa), Tugu (tempat berdirinya padrao Sunda-Portugis) serta Maluku. Bentuk awal musik ini disebut moresco, yang diiringi oleh alat musik dawai. Musik keroncong yang berasal dari Tugu disebut keroncong Tugu. Dalam perkembangannya, masuk sejumlah unsur tradisional Nusantara, seperti penggunaan Seruling gamelan. Pada sekitar abad ke-19 bentuk musik campuran ini sudah populer di banyak tempat di Nusantara, bahkan hingga ke Semenanjung Malaya. Masa keemasan ini berlanjut hingga sekitar tahun 1960-an, dan kemudian meredup akibat masuknya gelombang musik populer (musik rock yang berkembang sejak 1950, dan berjayanya musik Beatles serta beberapa komponen dan sejenisnya sejak tahun 1961 hingga sekarang). Meskipun demikian, musik keroncong masih tetap dimainkan dan dinikmati oleh berbagai lapisan masyarakat di Indonesia hingga sekarang.
